Welcome to The Oscar Gown Rundown

The Oscars are one of the most glamorous nights of the year, that goes without saying. But let’s cut the crap get to the heart of the entire occasion; the reason we even watch this entire award show. The gowns, the gowns, OH the gowns. I have scoured the internet for you lovelies and have provided commentary along with images for my top 7 dresses. Let’s go in reverse order, for funzies.

7.) Zoe Saldana: Once you’ve been slapped awake after having fainted at the sight of Zoe’s stunning face and figure, you finally realize that her impeccably tailored dress designed by Alexis Mabille is something out of a fairy tail. The flower detailed bodice along the neckline is so delicate, it almost looks crafted out of paper. It rests upon a much more structured bodice giving the dress some structure. The mermaid train flowing behind Zoe gives the onlooker a little something extra to behold as she turns to walk away. The layering of the light and dark grey fabric along the train would not be my first choice, had Zoe asked me to design her dress, but all things considered, the dress oozes old hollywood glamour with a spicy little twist. She done good.

6.) Jennifer Hudson: I loved the grey blue form fitting gown that this diva of divas chose to grace the red carpet with. I could not take my eyes off of her for a moment. I thought the Cavalli gown fit her like a glove (tailoring can make or break any dress, it’s just a rule) without making me cringe at the thought of the pain the seams might be in. She looked beautifully poised with the addition of the longer sleeves and the more conservative neckline. Hudson was the epitome of right doses of glamour, class, and drama. All in all, that dress did spectacular things for her.

5.) Jennifer Lawrence: This dress—nay, this masterpiece instantly took my breath away. Although I would have liked to see her in something a little more daring and younger looking, this gown is nothing to be trifled with. The simple strapless bodice moving into the full skirt below seamlessly created the illusion of a walking dream. She grounded herself in the dress very well, not allowing it to engulf her. I detest when starlets are swimming in gowns that overpower them. Lawrence took her place last night among Hollywood’s elite in this stunningly dramatic Dior creation. Yeses all around.

4.) Alicia Vikander: This dress was an absolute highlight for me. The very first thing that struck me was the color. The soft blue is complimented by the soft, classic shape of the dress, similar to Jennifer Hudson’s. The lace applique that now graces my dreams is adorned with soft beading that adds a layer of texture without the harsh shine of sequins. The thin yellow ribbon tied at the waist is the perfect addition to break apart the monotony that can sometimes be unavoidable with these types of gowns. The sleeve length is perfection and her make up and hair perfectly compliment the entire look. Bravo Alicia.

3.) Jennifer Aniston: The red, oh the red. This color is often difficult to pull off on the red carpet for obvious reasons (the monotony just recently addressed with Alicia Vikander) however, Aniston paired such a statement dress with simple hair and make up (bordering on boring, for some) that the entire look is unequivocally focused on Valentino’s gown. She too was not overpowered by her dress and drama incarnate known as Valentino’s creation was the perfect Oscar night choice. 

2.) Halle Berry: In an attempt to not repeat myself while also simultaneously not caring, we need to talk about the tailoring of this dress. It fits her absolutely perfectly in every way. It makes the entire look so refined. I am also a huge proponent of age appropriate dressing and in this instance, Halle as hit it right on the nose. The right amount of décolletage is displayed while not teetering on discomfort for all those within a 10 mile radius. She has encapsulated Oscar glamour in only the way Halle knows how to. I love her short hair with a passion, a passion that only grew when I finally saw the number 1 gown…

1.) Charlize Theron: I have almost no words for this dress/woman/queen among peasants. The tailoring, the neckline, the color, the train, its as if the stars (no pun intended) were aligned in every way possible. I think my favorite part of this look was the blonde pixie cut and her bright, glowing skin. The minimal jewelry lent itself impeccably well to the overall clean aesthetic Theron decided to put forth. This was hands down, the most flawless look of the night. You win my Oscar for best dressed, Charlize. I know it means a lot to you.
